Guerilla Tactics vs. Boredom and Stupidity!

Typical graffiti from Sao Paulo

Typical graffiti from Sao Paulo

by Valentin Schipfer

Did you know that some years ago the megalopolis São Paulo in Brazil had banned commercial advertising in the city? Since stone-age cave-painting we know, there has always been kind of a natural urge of humanity for signs and symbols in public space. That’s why after the ban in São Paulo graffiti increased exponentially. Nevertheless the city continued to exist and 70 percent of city residents find the ban beneficial . Some times I wish the landscapes of European cities strip too all of its billboards – at least the boring ones. Fortunately, some advertising agencies have discovered more creative modes to utilize urban public space. My first example on how this is done comes from Berlin. Continue reading

Urban Explorations: Covered Passages in Paris

Titelbild

by Markus Kather

Visiting Paris last month, strolling off the beaten track, I found myself in a labyrinth of covered passages. Most of them are situated in the areas bordering the Grands Boulevards. The passages are super diverse in architecture and patterns of use. Entering a passage from one side will drop you out in an entirely different environment on the other side. I started with some really flamboyant ones, and then discovered that there are numerous vacant passages – and some rather sketchy ones. So I tried to discover, what happened to them and what their function in today’s urban space is.  Continue reading

Gardens in the City (I): Community Gardening

Prinzessinnengarten

by Markus Kather

Despite (or because of) the grey Berlin winter, I was thinking about green spaces lately. Urban gardening and urban gardens became one of the top issues in urbanism: as a (planner’s) strategy to deal with transformations in society and texture of the city and as an emancipatory movement of citizens. In a mini-series I want to shed light on some of the phenomena by having a closer look at different types of urban gardens and urban nature. From subsistence farming in Asian and Latin American Megacities to guerrilla gardening and green rooftops in European and American cities: urban gardens are a worldwide movement. In this first part, I want to focus on community gardening projects. What is their impact on urban society? I take example from Berlin and Detroit to see how the gardens are building community and how they are used as a means to deal with changing cities.  Continue reading

Uberlândia – or why we should hear more about second- and third-row cities

By Renard Teipelke

Uberlândia – Uber what? Denmark, The Netherlands, or a city in J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings? Far from that! Uberlândia is actually a medium-sized city in Brazil (population: 604’000). On first sight, the city seems to be nothing more than the second-largest city in the state of Minas Gerais. Uberlândia is strategically situated between Brazilian’s coastal urban areas and the hinterland, thus making the city a major logistics hub. But one major project that has been implemented in Uberlândia for the past 20 years exemplifies what we can learn from cities in the second- or, in this case maybe even, third row. It is about going beyond the prime big shining examples we (professionals in academia, the media, politics, and business) are likely to look at most of the time. Continue reading

Three Short Movies about Traveling the World and Their Messages

By Renard Teipelke

Traveling the world as an adventure (or a luxury) undertaken by young adults has become a well-known part of life of today’s younger generations. Multiple blogs are filled with online diaries, pictures, videos, links, and other pieces of information that are shared with friends and the world wide web for various reasons. Rick Mereki, Tim White, und Andrew Lees have been on a six-week travel around the world and made three short movies with impressions from the eleven countries they visited. Each movie has been framed by a specific theme, and they all highlight (indirectly) many aspects of traveling the world and understanding its heterogeneity and complexity – both, as I would say, with regard to leisure activities as well as research. The Human Costs of Urban Renewal in Hong Kong: Dave and Christie, Part 1

Hong Kong tenement buildings

by Rowena Lee and Patricia Woo*

Dave never quite enjoys climbing the five flights of dark, narrow staircases to his home.  The landing on each floor is so small, he thought as he put one foot in front of the other, he would be pushed off to the stairs if a pregnant Christie emerged from one of the doors.

Christie and Dave love each other.  She is 26, saleslady in a high-end fashion boutique.  He is 35, an experienced merchandiser in a medium-size clothing enterprise. Together they earn HK$28000 (about 2800 Euros) a month.  HK$3300 goes to rent, for a “sub-divided apartment” 2 blocks away from Dave’s office. Continue reading
